Introduction of The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Nanchang University


The school of chemistry and chemicalEngineeringNanchang Universitywas founded in 1958, and has a history of more than 60 years. In 1986, it was awarded a master degree program in Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. In 2010, it was awarded a Ph. D. degree program in chemistry as a first-level discipline. In 2014, it was awarded a postdoctoral exchange station in chemistry. The College has formed a team consisting of National Outstanding Young Scholar, Ten Thousand People Plan Scholar, The Yangtze River Scholar, The Winner of the Second Prize in Natural Science, and 107 other core faculty members, which has a pyramid type structure. 74.7% of the faculty own Ph. D. degree, and 41.1% of them have the experience to study abroad.

Focusing on the national sustainable development strategy and the necessity of developing pillar industries in Jiangxi Province, and depending on the present industries of ferroelectrics, lithium batteries, rare earth resources and organic silicon, College of chemistry is mainly performing research on ferroelectric chemistry, new energy chemistry, green catalytic engineering, and rare earth materials. The chemistry in college is the first batch of leading disciplines of the University Discipline Alliance of Jiangxi Province. In 2020, the chemistry disciplines’ Global ESI Ranking is in the top 3.55‰. Among them, Energy Storage Material Technology and Optical Health Technology are selected as the National Double First-rate Disciplines, and the Ferro-electricity direction has reached the globally advanced level. In 2020, the Applied Chemistry in college was selected as the first batch of National First-rate undergraduate construction sites. The College of chemistry has 5 provincial and ministerial key laboratories. Over recent five years, the College has obtained about one hundred national funding programs, including National Key Research Program of China, the Major and the Key Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Outstanding Young Scholar Program and the General Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Professor RengenXiong’s research achievement won the “Top Ten Scientific and Technological Advances in Chinese Higher Education” projects. Up to date, the faculty of chemistry has published more than 700 papers, including some in internationally high-end journals, such as Science, PNAS, JACS, Angew. Chem., won 7 provincial and ministerial awards and been approved more than 100 patents.

The targets of the college are to train students with strong professional basic knowledge and good scientific research capabilities, thus they have the ability to understand the development direction in chemistry-related fields. Furthermore, the students will build up the ability to do theoretical and frontier research projects independently, solve complicated engineering problems and develop chemistry related products. Eventually, the students can become innovative talents with good moral, intellectual and body, and can do creative work in the field of chemistry.

The college adopts the combination of independent and foreign joint training to cultivate graduate students with plans in advance. After graduation, some of them continued to study further in The Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences or other well-known domestic or abroad universities. Most of other students were contracted and employed by chemistry and chemical industry companies in other provinces, with an employment rate over 90%. Those employed students are highly commented by the employers because of their strong basic knowledge, good personal quality and high creativity.

The construction and good development of chemistry at Nanchang University will have a great positive impact on chemical sciences of both China and Jiangxi Province, thus pushing forward the economy development significantly. The College of chemistry will continue to grasp the opportunity, focus on the themes of "innovation" and "quality", and improve the quality of talent training. It is expected to cultivate more high-level and high-quality people with diversity and innovative capability, and produce landmark achievements with globally advanced level. As a consequence, the College of chemistry will provide more talent resources and intellectual support for the national economy and society development.
