College of Chemistry, Nanchang University

Chemistry of Nanchang University is originated from the chemistry department of Jiangxi University established in 1958, which was one of the earliest science and engineering disciplines at Nanchang University. It was renamed as College of Chemistry in 2014 after years of faculty recombination. Currently, College of Chemistry has one province level key laboratory, namely, New Energy Chemistry Institute of Jiangxi Province; and three university level institutes, which are Institute of Polymer Science, Institute of Applied Chemistry and Rare Earth and Micro-Nano Functional Materials Research Center. The college has both first-level discipline Ph.D program of chemistry and second-level discipline Ph.D program of industrial catalysis; two postdoctoral research stations, which are chemistry and chemical engineering & technology. In addition, the college has a first-level discipline master program of Chemistry and three second-level discipline master programs of Applied Chemistry, Industrial Catalysis and Pharmaceutical Engineering, covering all of the eight second-level disciplines of the college. At present, there are 713 undergraduate students, 235 master students and 37 doctoral students at the college. In addition, the college has become the team member of Chinese Chemical Society and the council member of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Society of Jiangxi Province. In March 2016, chemistry key discipline of province level was identified as one of the first leading disciplines of Jiangxi province universities alliance. At the same time, chemistry was selected as the First-class Disciplines of Nanchang University; New Energy Nano-materials and Devices Innovation Team was selected as Technological Advantages Innovation Team of Jiangxi Province and First-class Discipline Project of Nanchang University. Furthermore, "New Energy Nano-materials and Devices" was selected as 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Jiangxi Province.

College of chemistry has abundant faculty resources with 94 full-time teachers, which includes 28 professors, 24 associate professors, 30 Ph. D supervisors (including hired externally), 74 master supervisors (including hired externally). 63.8% of the full-time teachers have doctoral degree, and 64.9% of the full-time teachers are young and middle age persons. Therefore, the teaching staff has a rational structure, high quality, stable team and is full of vigor, which can meet the requirements of an innovation high-level research university.

The college has emphasized on teaching and research work, thus achieving fruitful results over recent years. In 2014, Professor Chen Yi-wang was successfully selected as National Young and Middle-aged Technological Innovation Leading Talents after becoming our first National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars. At the same time, he became the meeting valuator of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Now, college of chemistry has one member of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars; one member of National young and Middle-aged Technological Innovation Leading Talents; one member of National Teaching Model; three members of Education Ministry's New Century Excellent Talents Supporting Program; two members of State Council Special Allowance; two member of Jiangxi Provincial Government Special Allowance; one member of Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Model; one member of Jiangxi Outstanding Contribution Talents; two members of Jiangxi Ganpo. 555 Program for Excellent Scholars; three members of Academic Leaders of Major Subjects in Jiangxi Province; four members of Young Scientists of Jiangxi Province; eight members of Young Academic Leaders in Jiangxi Province; seven members of Young and Middle-Aged Principal Teachers of Universities and Colleges in Jiangxi Province; two winners of May 4th Youth Medal in Jiangxi Province; one winner of Teacher with High standard Ethics in Jiangxi Province; three winners of Outstanding Graduate Instructor in Jiangxi Province; one winner of Jiang-ling Technology Elite Award in Jiangxi Province. In addition, the college also has a number of teaching teams with rich experience and excellent teaching quality in the frontier of undergraduate teaching. Currently, there are 8 provincial high quality courses, 4 school-level high quality courses, 4 provincial excellent resource sharing courses, multiple provincial teaching achievement awards, more than 20 items of provincial teaching reforming projects, and 1 item of the excellent prize of national multimedia course competition award. Moreover, the college won the first prize of undergraduate teaching evaluation in both 2014 and 2015 at Nanchang University. In 2015, the college also won the first prize of under graduate major evaluation of Nanchang University.

Over the past three years, the college has undertaken 76 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, including National 973 and 863 Sub-projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China Projects, Ph. D Fund and Special Fund of Ministry of Education, and Major Project of the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangxi Province, etc, with more than 30 million RMB. Furthermore, the college has obtained fruitful achievements with the efforts of all the faculty. Recently, it has won 5 second prize and 4 third prize of the Natural Science Award of Jiangxi province; 1 first prize and 2 third prize of the Jiangxi Province Technology Invention Award; 1 third prize of Jiangxi Province Science and Technology Progress Award; 2 third prize of Jiangxi Province technological invention Award; 4 first prize, 6 second prize and 1 third prize of Jiangxi Higher Education Science and Technology Achievement Award; 1 first prize and 1 second prize of Jiangxi Province Teaching Achievement Award. As to the number of National Natural Science Foundation of China Projects and high-level scientific papers, the college has always been ranked forefront of the whole University. The data released by the United States Essential Science Indicators Database (ESI) has revealed that ESI ranking of chemistry discipline of Nanchang University has been top 1% among the global universities and research institutions for four successive years. In 2015, It has been ranked in 72% of the world's TOP 1%  (792/1103), which indicated that chemistry has entered the international high level disciplines. According to Thomson Reuters' “2015 frontier research” report, both of the research achievements of "high energy conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells" and " the synthesis, properties of gathering induced luminescence compounds for cellular imaging" have been ranked into the world's top 10. In 2015, the college published 93 papers indexed by SCI 1 area, accounting for 24.7% SCI 1 area indexed papers of the whole University. In addition, according to the latest data of the United States ESI on November 14, 2015, 39 papers of Nanchang University were in the ranks of high-level papers, among which 14 papers were published by college of chemistry, accounting for 35.9% of the whole university, including 6 papers related to chemistry (100% in this discipline), 2 papers related to material science (66.7% of in this discipline); 3 papers related to physics (60% of this discipline); 1 paper related to biology and biochemistry (50% of this discipline);1 paper related to pharmacology and toxicology (50% of l in this discipline);1 paper related to engineering  (33.3% of in this discipline). These data fully demonstrated that high-level papers of chemistry have covered a wide range of disciplines of the university, which provides supporting the university discipline construction. The college has successfully hosted the 14th National Applied Chemistry Annual Meeting and the 9th National Academic Conference of Inorganic Chemistry, and sponsored the Gan-po Chemical Frontier Forum over the past five years, and initiated the First Jiangxi Chemical Experiment Skill Competition of College Students, and launched Jiangxi College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Prof. Dr. Entrepreneurs Association for eight consecutive years and times. Furthermore, "Zhihui Chemical" Famous Teacher Forum established in 2015 has successively invited a large number of well-known experts and scholars domestic and abroad to give lectures, including academician Li Yong-fang, academician Cheng Hui-ming and academician Liu Zhong-fan. More importantly, "Zhihui Chemistry" undergraduate research training program enormously promotes students’ innovation ability. As a consequence, the undergraduate published 18 SCI papers in 2015.

The college also established Agilent Scholarships, Ri-zhi-sheng Technology Scholarships, Da-ying Scholarships, Betley Scholarships, Ogilvy Technology Scholarships, Wan-he-da Technology Scholarships, and Sheng-yi Prize (or aid) Scholarships. The total granting is nearly 1 million RMB, which has covered different departments, different majors, and students at all grades and levels, thus the college is  the most funded by alumni at the university.

The college of Chemistry focuses on "leading by famous teachers, polytechnic penetration, collaborative innovation, construction of high-level research institute". It tries to promote teaching with research and mobilize research with teaching. Through deepening teaching reformation, optimizing course system, updating teaching content and improving the quality of personnel training, the ultimate goal of college of chemistry is to build a technological innovation mechanism with academic leaders as the core roles, innovation team as the base, research projects as the link, and scientific research institutions as the carrier. More importantly, it is time to make academic basic education teaching and innovative research strength to a higher new level, thus to construct the teaching and scientific research training base of high-quality creative talents, and enhance the innovative spirit and practical ability of students. Besides, chemistry institute has made dramatic breakthroughs in international education. At Summer School each year, international renowned scholars will be invited to teach classes. The college has also collaborated with the National University of Singapore by implementing a “3 + 1 + 1” training mode, for which the students study 3 years at Nanchang University, 1 year at Suzhou Institute of the National University of Singapore and the 1 year at the National University of Singapore. The students will receive a diploma and bachelor's degree certificate of Nanchang University, and a Master’s degree of the National University of Singapore.

College of chemistry has continuously focused on the notion of training people by teaching, supervising and servicing, thus producing a group of outstanding teachers like Professor Shi Jie-qiu, "Model of Teachers in Jiangxi Province", and creating a harmonious education environment.
